Do gray marketers serve useful marketing functions-for consumers and manufacturers? A gray market exists when a manufacturer ends up with an unintended channel of distribution that performs activities similar to the planned channel-hence the term parallel distribution. The reason that the gray market truly exists is because of price differential. If you can buy the good and transfer it over to another country at still a lower cost than the manufacturer than they will do it and that is why we may see the same product at two different costs here. They gray market is not necessarily illegal which is why it is called the gray market not the black market. A grey market product is one that is imported by an unauthorized party. Chapter 6 1. What are the characteristics of culture? -Culture is a set of traditional beliefs and values that are transmitted and shared in a given society. It is also the total way of life and thinking patterns that are passed from generation to generation. 1st characteristic- Culture is PRESCRIPTIVE-It prescribes the kinds of behavior considered acceptable in the society. It simplifies for us product choices that we know will or will not be acceptable. 2nd – Culture is SOCIALLY SHARED- Must be based on social interaction and creation. It can’t exist by itself so it must be shared by members of a society, thus acting to reinforce culture’s prescriptive nature. 3rd- Culture FACILITATES COMMUNICATION- it imposes common habits of thought and feeling among people. It makes it easier to communicate with a given group of people. But it also may hinder communication with other groups because of lack of same values. 4th- Culture is LEARNED- It is not genetic but it is learned. Socialization /Enculturation- when culture is learned from parents or when raised. Acculturation- When it is learned later on in life. 5th-Culture is SUBJECTIVE- People in different cultures often have different ideas about the same object.
