Tiffany Carter Narrative Essay Bittersweet Defeat I never realized how crucial competition was to our high school varsity team until I joined the cheerleading squad my freshman year. From day one we began learning and critiquing our arduous routine. We had only three months to prepare ourselves, and I felt as if my cheering abilities were not up to par with the rest of the squad. The superior, intimidating senior captains were extremely adamant about the new girls’ taking it seriously and giving 110%. For the next several months, the Jim Lilly Memorial Gymnasium became my home. Thirteen ambitious, aggressive young ladies had the aspiration and determination to defeat the dominant, defending squad of Woodrow Wilson High School and advance to the state championships later that winter. I eventually became immune to the smell of the freshly waxed wooden floor, and the constant buzzing of the overhead lights remained in my head for weeks. The unpleasant coldness of the bleachers at 7:00 a.m.
