"Don't mess with the bull young man, you'll get the horns." This quote is from the movie The Breakfast Club, which stared several successful actors of the 80’s, better known as the “Brat Pack.” In this movie the actors are subjected to a whole day experience at school on a Saturday. They are supposed to write an essay of no less than 1000 words detailing their character. However, instead of writing the essay the viewer is presented with a movie based on the interactions of these characters and exactly how they feel. This applies appropriately to our lesson in psychology dealing with adolescents. The main people associated with the ideas over adolescents are Erikson, Marcia, and Kohlberg. Each one of these psychologists explains their ideas in different ways. However, each character in the movie can be applied to certain specifics of each psychologist. The characters in the movie are: Andrew Clarke, Brian Johnson, John Bender, Claire Standish, and Allison Reynolds. In Erik Erikson’s theory, in the fifth crisis of psychological development, an adolescent seeks to develop a coherent sense of self, including the role he/she is to play in society. This concept is known as identity versus role confusion (identity confusion). The first character I am going to look at is Andrew Clarke. He is an athletic jock, who is in detention because he taped a kid’s buttocks together for approval from his father. Andrew is stuck in role confusion because he doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life and simply follows what his dad wants him to do.
