Oskar Schindler was a man who went through a complete change during his sixty-six year life. He was a man who started as an innocent young boy, who grew up into a terrible older man, who ended as a kind-hearted human being who saved many lives of otherwise helpless people. How did Schindler make such a change in his life? Was Schindler a true hero, even after all of his bad behavior? Oskar Schindler was born on April 28, 1908 in Zwitlau, Austria-Hungary, what is now Moravia in the Czech Republic. He grew up in a Catholic family and everyone was very religious. He became familiar with Jews when he was a young boy, when he befriended a young Jewish boy, who he then formed a bond with. (Bülow) His father owned a family business, which he had a guaranteed position in, if he chose to accept it. Therefore, that would make him a very rich man. However, Schindler made very little of his younger life. He did marry a young woman named Emily in 1927. Shortly after the marriage began, Oskar developed another love…for drinking. Schindler never had children with Emily, but had two children outside of the marriage with a mistress of his. He constantly cheated on his wife, and later became known as an alcoholic womanizer. He also became known as cynical, greedy, and was also a gambler. In 1935, the Schindler family business went bankrupt due to worldwide depression thanks to the Stock Market Crash of 1929. (Bülow; Hill) Later on, Schindler became a spy for the German counter-intelligence service in the 1930s. During his times of being a German spy, he was a member of the Nazi political party. In December of 1939, Schindler bought an enamel factory, which would later make him famous. (Hill, Aberly) Oskar Schindler became great at gathering information for people by charming them.
