He tells this to Perseus thinking that he would never be able to accomplish such a task and that he would end up dying. So on the day of his party Perseus does not have a gift for Polydectes, he then announces that he will go capture the head of one f the Gorgons. So right away Perseus leaves and sets sail for his journey. On his way there he encounters Hermes, the messenger god, Hermes gives Perseus a sword that can never be broken.
