The libretto of the opera came to Stephanie and Mozart ready-made. ... The story and music of The Abduction were part of this Turkish craze. However what Mozart impresses as Turkish melodies doesn’t have precise relationship with the actual; it’s actually his point of view of Turkish music style. Probably Mozart was affected by the Ottoman “mehter” visiting Vienna from time to time and as a result he used mostly percussion instruments and created his way of Turkish music which is more exotic than it really is.
