The purpose of the Yucca Mountain Site Project is to determine if the mountain in Nevada, is a good and reliable site for all used nuclear fuel and high level radioactive waste repository. ... If the Yucca Mountain site is found suitable and a license by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is approved, an underground disposal facility is to be built inside the mountain. The project does involve scientific study on Yucca Mountain’s geology, hydrology, biology and its climate. If Yucca Mountain is found as the best site for storing the waste, it could be the first long-term solution to the very long and difficult environmental problem.
The Yucca Mountain site is a United States Department of Energy project located in Nye County, Nevada, and approximately 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas. ... Yucca Mountain is located within the Western Shoshone Nation and for quite some time has been a place of spiritual energy for the Shoshone and the Pauite people. The water of the mountain is also very sacred to these people, as well as for the other people of the desert. Yucca Mountain and its surrounding area, was never owned by the United States government. ... Many scientists have discovered that Yucca Mountain in Nevada has many features that would make for an excellent nuclear waste repository. Many scientists do believe that the mountain will keep the waste isolated for many thousands of years. The physical characteristics that do make Yucca Mountain a great site for waste disposal include: its remote location and long distance from a large population center. Again as I stated above, Yucca Mountain is 100 miles from Las Vegas, Nevada.
