Biography Man Ray: 1890-1976 Man Ray. It is a name given by his family when he was 15, and he wished only to be known by that name. He was born in Philadelphia and he later moved with his family to New York City where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts and the Ferrer School. He had an early desire to become a painter, and yet during that time he also studied architectural drawing and engineering. After visiting an Armory Show, he finds inspiration from the works of Marcel Duchamp and Francis Picabia. He then goes home to make his first cubist painting. Cubism is the nature of reducing, usually artwork to abstract geometrical figures. His first cubist picture was a portrait of Alfred Stieglitz, also someone whom he finds inspiration in.
