Sexually Transmitted Diseases and the Prevalence among Young Adults

Sexually Transmitted Diseases and the Prevalence among Young Adults

HL 311

Introduction

This report is to provide information that STDs have become an increasing issue among young adults in the state of Michigan as well as Nationwide. The report begins by discussing the most prominent STDs among young people and why it is an increasing health risk facing students today. ... Finally, a conclusion discusses whether the data obtained will support the secondary data collected as well as the students’ beliefs that STDs are more prominent among college age adults. ... The age range for college students generally is from late adolescence to young adults, therefore all statistics gathered were on the young adult population. The many problems with STDs affecting young adults varies from earlier age of sexual contact to symptoms going unnoticed, untreated, and in effect spread to other people. Among college students who live away from home, 56 percent had been sexually active while attending college, and 73 percent of that group reported having unprotected sex while in college, says the survey by the Society for Adolescent Medicine. ... 82% of cases of gonorrhea occur in teenagers and young adults, and females are twice as likely to become infected after one act of intercourse with an infected male as males are after one act of intercourse with an infected female. ... The rates of primary and secondary syphilis were highest among 20- to 29-year-old males throughout this period, rates among 15- to 19-year-old males rose 41% in the last half of the decade (http://www. ... com, Sexually Transmitted Diseases). ...
Compared to older adults, adolescents (10- to 19-year-olds) and young adults (20- to 24-year-olds) are at higher risk for acquiring STDs for a number of reasons: they may be more likely to have multiple (sequential or concurrent) sexual partners rather than a single, long-term relationship; they may be more likely to engage in unprotected intercourse; and they may select partners at higher risk.
