Ancient Hebrew Idea of Poverty
The Hebrew Bible contains a wide array of stories and wisdoms bound together to help people understand the way they should lead their lives in order to please God. Though it is in no way a focus, the idea of poverty is quite prevalent throughout the entire text. ... Secondly, we see poverty, both on earth and in the after life, being used as a deterrent against sinful behavior. ... A broader idea that comes across in these ancient books is that God gives people everything so nothing is really ours; it is His to give and take as he pleases. Though there are many other categories that refer to the poor, these are the broad categories by which we can focus to try to understand the ancient Hebrew idea of poverty. ... x=5977|1||||job|AA1VDw">Job we see the ideal Hebrew, one that does not condemn the Lord though he has been stripped of everything. ... We can see this forcefulness being used increasingly as we look at other aspects of poverty.
Throughout the Hebrew Bible, we notice the threat of poverty being used as a deterrent, discouraging bad behaviors. In the Wisdom books people who sin, or commit a bad deed, are to expect poverty either in this life or in the afterlife. ... x=5977|1||||gifts|AA1VDw">gifts to the rich-both come to poverty.” (Proverbs 22:16) We see that in order to discourage maltreatment, performers of that act are reminded that they will suffer poverty in the end.
