Saint Jerome was a student of Saint Gregory of Nazianzen, and was secretary to Pope Damasus who asked Jerome to come back to Rome and work for him; however, when Jerome was in Rome he acquired many enemies because of his outspokenness towards his dislike of the luxurious style of living in Rome. Damascus decided that Jerome’s incredible talent with language could be used to greatly benefit the Church.
