a typical day in a mothers day is a very hectic oneWhen I completed reading Chapter 3, “COMTEMPORARY TWO-PARENT FAMILIES Navigating Work and Family Challenges,” of the textbook Normal Family Processes, edited by Froma Walsh, I was feeling less guilty about being a working mother. I have always being on the assumption that working outside of the home would negatively affect my son’s opportunity for development. However, I felt better as I read chapter 3 where Ms. Walsh writes “In addition to the finding that maternal employment has no significant negative effects on children’s development, studies indicate that overall, nonmaternal child care in the first years of life had no negative effects on children’s attachment to their mothers (NICHD Early Child Care Research Network, 1997).” When my son was born eight years ago, my husband and I always discussed the fact that I wanted to continue working outside of the house.
