TRACK AND FIELD

Skill: Discus Throw Main Purpose: The purpose of this activity is first to teach the class the proper way to hold the discus and second to teach them the “Power Throw.” Equipment Needed: Discuses for students to practice with. Description of Activity: Good morning class. My name is Mr. Becker. Today we will be learning about the discus throw, which is a very popular throwing event in track and field. Today I would like to start class by teaching everyone the proper way to grip the disc. I will demonstrate the proper grip as I explain it. Use your dominant hand and just barely grip the disc with your fingers. Spread your fingers out evenly to allow yourself to hold the disc up without dropping it. This will take some practice. Now that we have practiced the grip, I would like to teach the class the “Power Throw,” which is the technique that most beginners start with. I will explain the power throw one step at a time. First, grip the disc as I have showed you.
