Karl Marx Paper
“A specter is haunting Europe- the Specter of Communism.” These are the beginning words of Karl Marx’s magnum opus, the Communist Manifesto, but this is merely a sample of the true prowess of Marx. In the Communist Manifesto uses vivid Karl Marx imagery, and a passionate, often scornful tone, to contrast the characters of the Bourgeoisie and Proletariat. Marx describes the capitalist system by writing that the Bourgeoisie only care for profits, using imagery to make them look like monsters and a harsh tone to show his disdain for them. When Marx writes about the Proletariat, he uses a proud tone to show his admiration for them, and makes the audience visualize the Proletariat as heroes. Marx juxtaposes the evil Bourgeoisie and the innocent Proletariat through tone and imagery, making the Bourgeoisie look like greedy monsters and the proletarians as oppressed heroes. ... Marx uses imagery to show class antagonisms and juxtapose the Bourgeoisie and the Proletariat, in his essay “Bourgeoisie and Proletariat.” “The cheap prices of its commodities are the heavy artillery with which it batters down all Chinese walls” (Marx, BAP 19). Marx makes the Bourgeoisie seem like violent aggressors bent upon conquering the markets of the world. But Marx’s prowess lies in his ability to tie together several points to create a large picture of the Bourgeoisie world, “gigantic means of production and of exchange, is like the sorcerer, who is no longer able to control the powers of the nether world whom he has called up by his spells.” (Marx, BAP 21). Marx in the earlier sentence showed the great power of the Bourgeoisie break China’s isolationism. But now Marx reveals that the Bourgeoisie, though mighty, have paradoxically weakened as a result of their progress.
