5.John Peter Zenger - He was a newspaper printer who reported on the corruption of the royal governor. Because of this he was put on trial and charged with seditious libel. Zenger argued that he merely printed the truth and with the help of Andrew Hamilton as his lawyer, was found not guilty. This was monumental in the steps toward freedom of expression in America. 6.Phillis Wheatley - She was a poet (c. 1753-1784), who was brought to Boston at the age of eight as a slave. At the age of twenty, she was taken back to England and published a book of verse and poems that reflected the influence of Alexander Pope.
