“Power Steer” In the Article “Power Steer” (New York Times Magazine March 31, 2002), Michael Pollan discusses how cattle are born, raised, and slaughtered. To do this, he purchased a cow, No. 534, and raised and followed it through all of the steps in its 14 month long life. He bought the calf from the Blair brothers 11,500 (8) acre short-grass prairie ranch South Dakota. Their ranch is the first stage in modern beef production (3). After checking out how things were done and helping out around the ranch for a few days, he left his cow in their hands and paid them to take care of it and to get it ready for the slaughter house.
