The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
The structure of The Importance of Being Earnest affects its classification as a
satirical work. It uses doubles such as, two heroines, two heroes, two different settings,
two main love stories, two men claiming to be Earnest, and two old ladies who have an
overwhelming respect for their prestigious and fictitious society. ... Gwendolen Fairfax is a city girl
insistent on marrying a man no other than one with the name of Earnest. ... She believes that other
men with a different name would not be as exciting and adventourous as one with the
honest name of Earnest. ... She fails to
realize even after finding out that her Earnest is a fraud, that men with other names are
not “boring”. ... Worthing’s evil brother, Earnest, shows
up.She immediately takes up to liking him; in this case more because he is a ‘bad boy’
than because he has the name of Earnest. There is an abudance of humor when the ladies
meet and have a civilized argument on who’s actually marrying “Earnest”.
