Arthur Miller portrays a horrific event of the Salem witch trials in the late 1600’s with his play, The Crucible. In the crucible, a town is torn apart by distrust, greed, stupidity, fear, and widespread panic, and at the center of it all is one man. This man, with his stubbornness, ignorance, and sheer stupidity tore Salem apart. Danforth was a man, who through his stubbornness, stupidity, ignorance, and disrespect, abused his power, claiming the lives of many innocent people. From Danforth’s first lines in the play, it is evident that this man is drunk on authority. His tone when he says, “You will keep your seat!” (p.84) is that of a man with an over inflated sense of power and authority. Later in this act, as Danforth walks to meet Giles, it is apparent that “Giles awaits (Danforth’s) wrath” (85).
