Effective Ministry
to the Afflicted
From A Father’s Journal (July 2, 1998)
Earlier this evening, my wife and I discussed, with close friends, much about the funeral service of our dear son and the effects it has already had on the hearts of many people. ... Nothing will crush your desire and ability to express compassion to the afflicted more than a spirit of judgement and condemnation. ...
Instead, the Christian that desires to help bear the burdens of an afflicted brother must first invest some time and thought into discovering some specific needs. ... ” What an example of true “Matthew 25” ministry! ... Preaching or quoting passages of Scripture, in themselves, does not bring comfort to the afflicted. ... ” Reminding the sick of the great promises of God, by lovingly quoting scripture, can be wonderfully soothing when presented by one who has already demonstrated sacrifical love and born up the burden of the afflicted. ... Remember to continue your ministry to the family if the sick one dies. ...
Your ministry to them needs to be redirected to meet these very different needs. In many ways, this type of ministry is more difficult. ... The challenge in ministering to them is to discover the most effective ways to show your love and acceptance. ... Though it is your solemn duty to minister to the afflicted, realize that you will be greatly blessed for it. ... There are too many to mention, but I share some of them that others might be given further insight into effective ministry to those sick, afflicted or bereaved.
