The last half decade in the telecom industry has be marked by tremendous transformation and opportunity. Wireless phones have emerged as an everyday item, complementing and maybe even replacing the traditional landline. The internet has become accessible to all first through traditional dial-up services, and now through high speed DSL and cable lines. Traditional long distance companies and even the local cable monopolies are finally establishing themselves in the local phone market. Local monopolies SBC and Verizon are expanding not only into long distance and internet access, but are developing their own plans to enter markets as far varied as satellite TV service. While this new environment has transformed the way people communicate, it has also transformed the traditional conservative telecom companies.
