Individuality

Picasso, Michelangelo, and van Eyck are all famous artists from different periods of time. These artists and more connect together to form the “stream of history” and all have one thing in common, individuality. Some artists are only pebbles and others are a significant turn in the stream of history. Starting from the time of Christ to the Modern Age art was an important way of expressing one’s self. Each artist had a different way of expressing themselves, which makes their art vital to history. Art in the time of Christ was a remembrance of a person. In Rome, a person was sculpted into marble or bronze and under the sculpture was an inscription of the person’s name, values, and achievements. Art in this time was also used as political advertisement. Augustus is a prime example. When he became an emperor, he became the idol of worship, which led to the decision of making a portrait of Augustus. His sculpture became an instrument of politics. Portraits of him spread into all the provinces, which came to be known as a political advertisement and was used for each emperor after Augustus. Sculpture was also a means of tracing history. Through that we could determine the Roman’s clothing, manners, and hair maintenance, which determined the time period of which the person lived in (Boorstin 175-178). El Greco was a prominent artist of this time (Fisher 161). The sculptures of the time of Christ were essential to the society and to history. During the Middle Ages, art went through a period called the Gothic Age. Not only did it involve art, but architecture was also included in the Gothic time period. Stained glass and illuminated manuscripts were also incorporated during this time.
