Growing up on the plantation of his master, Benjamin Turner, Nat was surrounded by
many influences of religion. ... Nat noticed that his master was extremely religious
during the prayer services he would have for his family and his slaves. After learning to read
from his master’s son, Nat became very devote and prayed and studied the Bible everyday. ... Nat was the name he received
which was a common form of Nathaniel, meaning “the gift of God” in Hebrew. This was
perhaps the shaping of Nat’s belief that he was chosen by God to lead the blacks out of slavery in
the South.
Even as a child, Nat was brought to believe that he was possessed with supernatural
powers, spirits of his African ancestors, but had deep Christian beliefs as well. ... Nat eventually became a
preacher for the local slaves and charted his connection to God through signs and even messages
