The British North American colonies had religious freedom, however there was a limit to the expansion of some religions due to dominant religious colonies. Colonies such as the Massachusetts Bay was influenced purely by the Puritans. Here puritans set up laws and a stable government. However the laws were based on their religious beliefs that initiated their intolerance to other religions. For example the puritans wrongfully treated the Quakers because of their beliefs. They minimized the expansion by starving, imprisoning, whipping, and by cutting off their ears. The Puritans gave the Quakers little freedom to exercise their beliefs. As the Puritans remained free to practice their beliefs, they limited the extent of the religious freedom for the Quakers.
