... Subtleties in popular stories, such as "Beowulf", were merely one way of converting the people of England. The Christian themes in the epic poem
"Beowulf" are an attempt to convert the Anglo-Saxon people of England to Christianity.
The main Christian theme in "Beowulf" is the character Beowulf being a symbol
for Jesus and his life. Beowulf embodied the qualities praised in feudal society but also
gave thanks to God for giving him those attributes of courage, honor, generosity, and
modesty - among other things. ... Jesus did the same, but in a more metaphorical sense. ... A constant and undying faith in God were trademarks of both Beowulf and Jesus.
The fourteen Geats with whom Beowulf traveled to Denmark are symbolic of the
twelve apostles, even down to the one Geat who dies because of evil. ... "So Beowulf/ Chose the mightiest men he could find,/ The bravest and best of the Geats, fourteen/ In all, and led them down to their boat. ... 29) The accompanying Geats were ready, able, and willing to do whatever Beowulf told them, just like Jesus and the apostles. ... 44) This description was probably to set the stage for how easily good, and especially Beowulf with the help of his God, could destroy evil.
