AN ECO-FEMINIST VISION
This is an extract from ‘Quest for Gender Justice – a critique of the status of Women in India’ (1993); an anthology by Dr. Sebasti L Raj
The essay is divided into 5 parts…
Part I: The ecological vision
The exploitation of nature and its scarce resources
Part II: The feminist vision
This part describes the link between women and nature and their “interdependence”
Part III: An Eco-feminist vision
Part IV: An Eco-feminist theological vision
Part V: An Eco-feminist vision in India
Part I describes nature as God’s good creation but also lists the various kinds of pollution such as
of the air (pollution from industries, vehicles, ozone layer depletion, global warming, etc)
of the water (industrial wastes poured out to water bodies, wastage of water, building of multi-purpose dams, massive deforestation causing droughts, etc)
of the land (depletion of soil nutrients by over-use, using artificial pesticides, insecticides and fertilizers, mining operations, etc)
The author describes these as acts of violence as they are “rapid and senseless”.
