A Tale of Two Egos (The Ego and the Dove) Patricia A. Walker MGT/331: Organizational Behavior Mr. San Milton September 23, 2003 Abstract This week’s individual assignment paper will address the identification and discussion of my organization’s management approaches used in conflict resolution. Such topics will include: indirect conflict management approaches and direct conflict management approaches. I will also discuss how the different conflict management approaches of my organization match or contradict my personal conflict-management preference or style. I will conclude my paper with the results from the “Conflict Management Styles”, Assessment 20. I will discuss my interpretation of the results of the assessment. A. Indirect Conflict Management Approaches “Indirect conflict management approaches share the common ground of avoiding direct dealings with personalities. They include: reduced interdependence, appeals to common goals, hierarchical referral, and alterations in the use of mythology and scripts” (Schermerhorn, et al., 2002, p.339). During my tenure with my organization, I have observed this form of conflict management approach. I have been directly involved with the “reduced interdependency” aspect of indirect conflict management approach. My former manager was a people person. We always shared things with each other; personally of professionally. He kept me informed of what was going on in the company and in our department. Occasionally, our relationship caused conflict between us; so we had to reduce our dependency of one another. By dependency, I mean, we took care of one another. He was the type of person that spoke what was on his mind. People in the office did not care for him very much so we would lean on each other for support. Because I worked with him, some people in the office did not care for me; and some still do not care for me but I have to deal with that. On the other hand, my present vice-president is just the opposite. He keeps our relationship strictly on a professional level.
