Robert Mondavi self named his wine making company in 1966 after gaining much experience from previously running his family’s small wine business. Through the development of innovative techniques in wine making, the Mondavi name first became prominent when the LA Times named their Cabernet Sauvignon the best made wine in California. A well respected name in the industry gave Mondavi the motive to take a proactive approach in getting his product to consumers. Robert Mondavi was the first in California industry to actively educate and promote the culture of fine wine. ... To make this move Mondavi purchased another California company, renaming it Woodbridge, which entail would become the company’s best selling wine of the 80’s. This was the beginning of Mondavi’s expansion as the company would continue to purchase and enter joint ventures with both foreign and domestic wineries.
