However, scientists are well on the path to discovering the biological aspects of alcoholism to prove it that is in fact an addiction and a brain disease. Progress in medical research gives hope to the development of medications to successfully treat this addiction. ... Many agree that a comprehensive treatment involving doctors as well as other health care professionals is the most effective solution to alcohol addiction.
To have a clear understanding of the medical addiction to alcohol, it is imperative to examine why people start to use the drug in the first place. ... This second group is prone to addiction because the addicts continue to drink regardless of the presence of physical and/or psychological problems induced by their drinking. ... ” By looking at alcohol dependence as a psychiatric disorder, we can then examine the biological transformation of the brain on this drug, understand what addiction really means, and how it operates. ...
