General Dynamics gets a large share of its revenues from government contracts. It produces aircrafts, boats, including nuclear submarines, missiles and army vehicles (tanks). It also makes some civilian aircrafts under the Cessna brand. The Crown family, being the largest shareholder, has influence to choose the CEO of the company. In the 1970s and early 1980s the CEO was David Lewis. Under his guidance, the company obtained important defense contracts. In the mid-80’s, the US government became more cost-conscious and defense spending declined. GD was also involved in a number of disputes with the US government with allegations of poor quality, fraud and corruption. The company was also briefly barred from bidding for Navy contracts and received negative press coverage. In 1985, Lewis, (retired), was replaced by Stanley Pace. GD agreeing to be monitored over a five year period, developed several new weapon systems for the US government.
