... There is however one war, a war that was fought in Vietnam in the 1960s that the United States have failed to win it, but instead, to retreat with an unbearable price. ... The war fought in Vietnam was a war that was in another type completely unfamiliar to the Americans. ... Many citizens back home in the United States protested against the war that meant nothing to them, which lead the government to finally realizing that the troops are in great peril and must be extracted from Vietnam to prevent a more catastrophic loss. ... ”(Wright 26) These words by Wright expressed the feelings and thoughts that both sides have had during the Vietnam War. ... The Americans had so much confidence in themselves that they would in the first days of combat stand up to fire, and when scores of their men fall, finally realize the situation that their in. ... The Vietcong had struck a nasty blow on the heads of the Americans, and they were completely unaware of that. ... It was a new war, a different war that the Americans fought in the Vietnam War. New combat strategy rose in Vietnam, catching the American forces off guard. Guerilla fighting was employed by the Vietcong on the Americans. The Americans, never having an encounter with guerilla warfare lost many men to the new and deadly form of combat. ... Even though the Americans had a far more technologically advanced arsenal and equipment, they proved to be outsmarted by the Vietcong. In the 1800s, when the French occupation in Vietnam was opposed, the Vietnamese retreated in the mountains, where they quickly adapted to the jungle and mountainous terrain. ... (Doyle 148-149) There were many little battles fought in Vietnam before the American involvement.
