Flags of Our Fathers is a true story about the battle that took place on Iwo Jima against the Japanese in which the Americans “suffered more than 26,000 casualties” (246) during it. In the battle just as in everyday life the values of the main characters’ were tested. These were courage, selflessness, and modesty. When these principles were put up to the test in the novel, the characters easily passed the test. First, the values of the main characters, which were the six flag raisers in the famous photograph, were courage, selflessness, honesty, and modesty. Courage was an important value for these people. Just the fact that the flagraisers voluntarily joined the Marines is enough to say that they were courageous. The flagraisers along with everyone else who joined the Marines were looking for the biggest challenges. “We felt they sent the Marines to the toughest places, and if it wasn’t tough, the Army went in.” (68) They were willing to put their life on the line for their country fighting on the battlefront instead of working in safer places such as recruiting offices.
