While not absolutely accurate, it is fitting to consider of Middle Age Welsh castles as having to be separating into three major categories. The primary collection are Norman castles, they consist of stone castles constructed by the conquering Normans beginning soon after their victory over the Saxons at Hastingsin the mid way of the 1100 century. These castles are established mainly in south Wales and along the border with England to the east. Excellent examples of this style of castle consist of Chepstow, Caerphilly and Pembroke; the Norman castles also included the white castle.
