Of all the hotly debated topics looming over society today, there is one that has divided friends, family, and lawmakers alike. Ecstasy is one of the most popular and yet sometimes the most dangerous drugs on the underground market today. Ecstasy is in very common usage among teenagers worldwide. People use Ecstasy because it provides them with access to an experience that they value. Unfortunately people often abuse the drug. Instead of experiencing the good aspect of the drug, the negative side soon begins to outweigh the positive side. With little factual information and education, teenager who use the drug are taking stabs in the dark. Most first time users do not know what they are getting themselves into. The only thing they have to go by for guidance about ecstasy is folklore. Unfortunately the rising problem of ecstasy abuse among teenagers is very real. Without proper enlightenment, we will never get past the first step of the abuse process. I. Substance Abuse. Drugs are defined as those substances other than food, water, or air, which affects the nervous system and structure and function of a living organism. Substance Abuse is one of the many social problems still lingering on today around the world. Humans have used drugs for several thousand years. Experience with drugs so often to where its effects are detrimental physically or mentally to a person is called drug abuse. Though drugs have no nutritional value whatsoever, people still abuse them for drugs provide people with different outlooks on aspects of society, peace of mind, or simply a pleasurable experience. Because people have an affinity for non-medical and medical drug use, it might be said that people like the experiences they have when they take drugs. What causes people to experience drugs? The drug’s chemical actions are part of the answer, but how much? The chemical actions of drugs were viewed as the primary reason people experienced certain changes when they took different drugs. The drug experience is a product of more factors than the drug’s pharmacological action. How the person is feeling at the time, characteristics of the drug user, and liking for new experiences are a few main factors on why people use drugs. The largest factor in drug use is by far simply curiosity, social pressure, availability of drugs, and escape from feeling badly. These factors are all too often given in to. In a 1996 survey conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for 1994, it was found that people ages 18-25 are the highest users of all illicit drugs. A percentage of 27.1, to be exact, was the portion of this group who had used illicit drugs in the past year. In a similar survey of youths, illicit drug use has been increasing significantly since 1992 among boys and girls ages 12-17. No such increase has been evident in people over 17. Teenagers seem to be more tolerant of illicit drug use while they also seem to fear it less than they did several years ago. The use of drugs is extremely glamorized on television, the internet, and in music.
