Macbeth

Because we first hear about Macbeth in the wounded captains account of his battlefield valour, our initial impression of him is a brave and capable warrior. This is shown when we are told by a sergeant that Macbeth has killed someone by ‘unseamed him from the nave to the chops’ (Act 1 Scene 1 Line 22) This perspective is complicated however, once we see Macbeth interact with the three witches, we realise that his physical courage, is joined by a consuming ambition. These three witches play a huge role in Macbeth. When Macbeth meets them we find out how gullible he really is. The third witch says, “ All hail, Macbeth! ... And this causes dramatic irony because, if Macbeth were to become king, he would have to think up an idea to take Duncan’s thrown.
