At that time Frank McCourt, who tells the story, is 5 years old. Frank and his family’s moving to Ireland from America, because the father can’t get a job over there. They’re very poor and they have to provide their family. In Ireland they live in a very poor town, named Limerick. The father can’t get a job there neither and his an alcoholic, so it’s very hard for the family. Especially the children. After some time in Ireland Franks twin brothers die, so now they’re just Frank and his little brother, Malachy.
