The history of the United States is short in the relative scope of the globe, a mere two hundred twenty-seven years old, yet its history is wide and varied. However, just as we were the first to put a man on the moon, there is also a dark side of the history. ... The very first riot in American history that involved inmates occurred before the first penitentiary had been created. In 1787, Daniel Shays, a former captain in the American Revolution, assisted a riot at a place of confinement and the eventual forced release of Massachusetts farmers who had been imprisoned because they could not pay their debt. ... Only ten percent of all total prison riots occurred prior to 1950, leaving a total of ninety percent of prison riots in less than one quarter of the nation’s history. ...
Their demands were the following: The current warden must resign, prisons must not get buzz cuts, the rat infestation must be alleviated, the poor sanitation must be addressed, and the guard’s practice of beating prisoners must be ended. ... While this is without a doubt the bloodiest prison riot in the history or prison riots, the very same factors that caused it to happen, identical to those that had caused the riots in Alcatraz and Trenton before, and every other one to date, are still present. ... A conflict between inmates and guards triggers a violent reaction, a chain of events occurs in which a group of prisons go on a rampage of destruction, hostages are usually taken and barricades are created as negotiations begin.
