The Explication of the Poem “Two Thoughts of Death” by Countee Cullen This poem dramatizes the poet’s feelings about his death. His first thoughts of death stresses that he does not care who prepares his body for viewing, or even who comes to pay their last respects. His second thoughts about death explains how he is satisfied with suffering; because once he is dead he will no longer have the weight of the world on his shoulders. The poet then starts to talk about the moment of his death. ... Cullen gives the impression when he writes, “When I am dead, it will not be much matter of concern to me who folds my hand…. ... ”, that once he is dead it is of no importance to him how he is put to rest, or even who morns his death.
