Howard Barker - The Possibilities
Howard Barker’s The Possibilities are a collection of ten short plays that look at conflict between human dignity. ... I will be discussing how Barker presents women. ... This issue comes up when a man enters the room where the two women are talking, the conversation doesn’t continue properly as the younger women keeps asking “who’s he” then she says “how can I continue to be honest when there is a (man)” it seems that Barker is trying to present the issue that women have difficulty talking to the opposite about sexuality, I think that Barker has presented this about women well, it is subtle but it comes across strong. ...
I think that Barker sides with the younger women as her argument seems to come across stronger, I think that if women were to read the play then they would also side with the younger women and her argument. ...
In this play the main ideas are brought across by the women, I think this is done by Barker to make it more personal and stronger as if the official was a man the young women couldn’t talk as freely and I don’t think the same view and points could be brought out. ...
Barker seems to present all different aspects and attitudes of women in his plays, in one – women are presented by their sexuality and how they use this, but in another – women are seen as mothers, wives and heroes.
