From it’s description “Lovely Bones” sounds like one of those supernatural clichés: the story of teenage Susie Salmon’s rape and murder, and the fallout those events have on her family as narrated in heaven by the dead girl herself. Rather than that being the end of her story, however, it is only the beginning. And the result of Alice Sebold’s first novel is anything but banal. Susie’s soul now inhabits a heaven that conforms to the facets of her young dreams, except the return of her life. Now she can only live vicariously through her family. She is reminded constantly that she has died before experiencing any rites of passage her herself.
