The Tacoma Narrows Bridge (TNB) tragedy is possibly one of the most fascinating scientific phenomena of the past century. ... Since the first day of its creation, the bridge experienced strange oscillations that were caused by varying wind currents over the sound. ... Later that year on November 7th, winds berated the bridge like never before and the story that ensues can only be outdone by the actual film footage of the tragedy caught by a local camera shop. ... Winds of 35 miles per hour pelted the bridge so hard that the TNB’s transverse vibrations mode was excited to a point of producing amplitude of one and a half feet. ... Any cars that were on the bridge were warned enough and traffic soon halted on the TNB all together. As if seeing resonance waves bounce back and forth on the bridge wasn’t amazing enough, the winds soon climbed to 42 miles per hour.
