The Day I Became Old Enough
The day was October 31, a very cool autumn morning. I was only thirteen and finally “old enough” for my dad to take me hunting with him on Lake of The Pines. I was so excited I could not sleep the night before. Watching the clock slowly tick by, I started to hear my Dad rustling around in his room. ... ” Wiping the sleep from my eyes, I get dressed from head to toe in camouflage that I gathered the night before. There have been so many mornings I have watched my Dad leave with his friends, wishing I could join them. Now the big day is finally here. I am what Dad considers “old enough.” I hurriedly get my gun and shells and make my way to the truck, where my hunting hero contemplates the day ahead. Little did I know what this day had in store for me.
As we started our journey to Lake of The Pines for my first hunt, I was so tired from not being able to sleep the night before that my eyes lost their will to stay open.
