Another influence in William Careys life was a group known as the Moravians. ... William Carey gives reference to them by saying, "Have not the missionaries of the Unitas Fratrum, or Moravian Brethren, encountered the scorching heat of Abyssinia, and the frozen climes of Greenland, and Labrador, their difficult languages, and savage manners? ... The Moravian missionary techniques were studied by William Carey and he believed by alluding to what they have done would influence the members of the Northampton Baptist Association. Although the Moravians had been to India it was not their primary missionary place, "The Moravian church emphasized missionary activity among the Native Americans and Europeans settlers in America.” Careys respect for the Moravian missionary work and accomplishments is fully laid bare when he writes, "But none of the moderns havent equaled the Moravian Brethren in its network: they have sent missionaries to Greenland, Labrador, and several of the West Indian Islands, which have been blessed for good. ... "
To gain a full understanding of William Careys genius for detailed and thoroughness someone needs to look no further than The Inquiry, written in 1792. ... In section 1 Carey devotes five pages to explaining the great commission and then refuting the common arguments given to actually filling the great commission. In the next section William explains the events which took place in the book Acts. ... After William gets a brief history of the events which took place from Paul’s day up to the 19th-century William begins section 3 with data on current world population trends.
William Carey spent years compiling an organizing information on world population groups in order to know how best to spread the gospel, "First, the inhabitants of the world according to this calculation, amount to about 731 millions; 420 millions of whom are still in pagan darkness; and 130 millions the followers of Mahomet; and 100 million Catholics; 44 million Protestants; 30 million of the Greek and Armenian churches; and perhaps 7 million Jews. ... William states his belief on the subject by saying, " it is well-known to require no very extraordinary talent to learn, in the space of a year, or two at most, the language of any people upon the earth, so much of its at least, as to be able to convey any sentiments we wish to their understanding." These three examples from William Careys Inquiry are just a brief example of the numerous topics covered in his pre-mission work.
