To say that there was one main reason for the failure of the Radical Republican’s plan for Reconstruction is ignorant, but I can say with confidence that the underlying theme to all the reasons was RACISM. Southern citizens were raised with the warped ideology that African Americans were property. They were brainwashed by their ancestors into believing slaves were inherently inferior to whites. As horrible and wrong as we know those statements to be, they were “truths” integral to the perpetuation of slavery. The Radical Republicans (RR) moved into the South during the Post Civil War Era and demanded that Southerners change their ways. They forced them into changing by passing the Civil Rights Bill of 1866 (pg 310) giving equal rights to freedmen.
