Department of Biological Sciences PREPARATION FOR UPPER LEVEL BIOLOGY COURSES 1. Know and be able to convert within metric units for length, mass, volume, time and temperature (e.g. 1 L = 1000 mL). 2. Name and explain the relationships between the different levels of structural organization that make up an organism: atoms, molecules, cells, tissues, organs and organisms. 3. For each of the organ systems of the body: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, lymphatic, respiratory, digestive, urinary and reproductive, briefly explain the major function(s) of each system. 4. Differentiate between matter and energy and between potential energy and kinetic energy; give one example of each type of energy. 5. Define chemical element and list the four elements that form the bulk of body matter. Define atom and describe the charges and positions in the atom of the neutron, electron and proton. 6. Define molecule, solution, solute, solvent, molecular weight, mole and molarity. Describe how to prepare solutions of a given molarity.
