Quiet Man movie vs Quiet Man book

... When people use other

people’s work to make a movie, they have a large responsibility. The film writer is

supposed to try and accurately adapt the book to a movie, but that does not always

happen. The film writer was not successful in adapting the “Quiet Man” into a movie. ... For instance,

Shawn is a young lad who is kind of small and quiet. ... Taking this out makes the movie lose its excitement,

effectiveness, and meaning. ...

Another example of material in the original text that was left out in the movie is,

Shawn first seeing Ellen at church and staring at her every Sunday. ... People of different religion or beliefs might not watch the

movie, because there is a church in it. If the film director leaves out the church, the movie

can appeal to everyone. ... In the movie he sees her in a field once and falls in love with her. ... The film writer took this

out because, in the movie, he lets them fall in love for themselves. If they

had included the “dowry thing” in the movie, some women would have been offended

and might have boycotted the movie. Women might have taken the movie as Big Liam

wanting to get Ellen off his hands, so he pays someone to take her. ... In the movie,
Ellen sings instead of sewing, which is loud. ... When you think of sewing, the reader thinks of

quiet time. In the story, Ellen was quiet, so sewing fit her well. However, in the movie,

Ellen is loud and singing all the time.

When Shawn and Ellen are done reading, they sit and talk quietly in their own quiet

way. They are both quiet people.
