Summary:
The story of Cannery Row follows the adventures of Mack and the boys, a group of unemployed yet resourceful men who inhabit a converted fish-meal shack on the edge of a vacant lot down on the Row. ... He created the whole scene of cannery row all over again and it seemed accurate. ...
Positives:
One of the things that I enjoy most about Cannery Row is the format that Steinbeck selected to tell his tale. ... Another thing I enjoyed about the novel was that even though Cannery Row is largely a novel of place, it’s also a novel that romanticizes the lives of the lonely and the disenfranchised. Immigrants, prostitutes, factory workers, and the unemployed all are given a place of honor in Cannery Row and rendered strangely attractive, in spite of their often desperate lives. ... In fact, Lee Chong, the shrewd businessman with a keen understanding of human behavior and a sharply logical mind, is my favorite inhabitant of the Row. He’s generous without sacrificing his business; he understands that his store is the trading post around which life in Cannery Row revolves.
