... This essay will not only focus on how Phelan has chosen to manipulate his readers but it also seeks to explore other avenues such as how having a predetermined judgement could affect the idea of an open mind. It also strives to better articulate what having an open mind could entail and what its value could be. ... By appealing to readers to suspend their judgement temporarily, he hopes that they will keep an open mind so he can persuade them to his point of view. If however, readers already have a predetermined judgement that differs from that of Phelan, he hopes that he is convincing enough to get them to change their stand. By challenging readers to temporarily suspend their judgement, he intends to make use of that vulnerability present to sway them to his viewpoint.
This brings us further to the issue of temporary suspension of judgement versus having a predetermined judgement. A predetermined judgement could be formed by the reader’s prior values and upbringing. ... This mind would not be open to change, and no amount of “guidance” towards a sympathetic view could alter their stand. The temporary suspension of judgement differs in the sense that it depends on whether the reader already had a predetermined judgement and was only suspending it to listen to what Phelan has to say.
