3. About Sikhism Sikhism began about 500 years ago in Punjab, a part of India. According to Sandeep Singh Brar, the word ‘Sikh’ in the Punjabi language means ‘disciple’, Sikhs are the disciples of God who follow the writings and teachings of the Ten Sikh Gurus. The Gurus The word ‘Guru’ is a Sanskrit word that means teacher, honored person, religious person or saint. However, Sikhism has a very specific definition of the word Guru. It means the descent of divine guidance to mankind provided through ten Enlightened Masters. This honor of being called a Sikh Guru applies only to the ten Gurus who founded the religion starting with Guru Nanak in 1469 and ending with Guru Gobind Singh in 1708; thereafter, it refers to the Sikh Holy Scriptures known as the Guru Granth Sahib. The Khalsa The word “Khalsa’ means ‘pure’. Khalsas are Sikhs which have undergone the sacred Amrit Ceremony, a baptize ceremony, initiated by the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh.
