Vasco Da Gama was born West Portugal. In 1497 he was selected by King Manuel I to discover the sea route to the distant spice lands. He was a violent man, and an expert at brutally torturing his prisoners. He was also daring rough when giving orders, strong enough to be feared and a hard worker. Da Gama was not a merchant He was known as a swordsman. He was never sent to take over the new lands, but was sent to seek out Christian kingdoms in the East Indies and get access to the great markets of Asia. Vasco Da Gama had four ships the "Sáo Gabriel", "Sáo Rafael", "Berrio" and a supply ship March to follow Vasco Da Gammas route. There were four ships each of them weighing 120 tones that Vasco Da Gamma had to use to find his way to India with.
