The Outsiders Essay The outsiders is a fascinating novel based on a group of teenagers and their conflicts as they struggle to survive in today’s harsh society. The novel deals with love and loyalty, gang warfare, poverty and family problems- but when all this clashes with social success, is life as a greaser too rough to cope? As Ponyboy unfolds the most difficult chapters of his life, one of the most oppressive issues that he is made to deal with is love and loyalty. Love and loyalty is addressed in the novel as one of the most difficult issues faced by teenagers. In fact, at certain points, every character in the book faces this matter, wether it be greaser or soc (which stands for socials). Ponyboy misunderstands Darry’s love and begins to hate him more than ever: “It was plain to me that Darry didn’t want me around. Sodapop deals with this issue too “I think I’m going to marry Sandy. After she gets out of school and I get a better job and everything” he loves Sandy and is serious about settling with her when she falls pregnant with another guy. Sodapop is prepared to forgive her but she returns all his letters back unopened. Jonny and Dally struggle with the lack of family love. They have to depend on the gang to find love and sense of belonging, as their families are insensitive and cruel.
